- The oldest player receives the Guard Bug card.
- He deals 8 cards to each player
- Place the remaining cards in the center as the draw pile
- Turn over the top card into the discard pile so that it is face up
Discard a card from your hand that is 1 higher or 1 lower than the most recently discarded card. If you cannot discard a card, you must draw a card. There are two twists to the game play these are 'Action Cards' and 'Cheating'.
You are allowed to 'make cards disappear' but you are only allowed to cheat if you follow these rules:
- Your hand of cards must always be kept above the table
- You can only cheat 1 card away at a time
- If someone is being called out on cheating, you cannot cheat while they are debating
- You can't cheat your last card away
If you have the 'Guard Bug' card you can never cheat, and you must keep watch for players cheating and if you catch them, yell it out! If you caught them right, they keep the card they were trying to get rid of, and then you pass them the Guard Bug card. If you accused someone who didn't cheat you must draw a card and keep the Guard Bug card..
There are action cards in the deck, they are signified by their pictures. Each bug does a different action, but still follows the regular number placing rules.
Moth: The Cheating Moth may not be discarded, traded or given away it must be cheated away. It still cannot be your last card.
Spider: When you play a Spider you may give away a card from your hand.
Mosquito: After playing the Mosquito your opponents race to slap the card itself. Everyone including the player who played the Mosquito give a card to the last player that slapped the Mosquito.
Cockroach: Once played, all players race to discard a matching number on top of the Cockroach only the first player to discard a card this way is allowed to leave their card discarded.
End of Round:
A round ends when a player has no cards left in their hand.
- Each Number Card is (-1 point)
- Action (Bug) Card (-5 points)
- The Cheating Moth (-10 points)
Record your scores, and the player on the left of the player that started the most recent round begins the new round. The game is played over a number of rounds equal to the number of players and whoever is the closest to a positive score at the end of the game wins.
The artwork in the game is alright, the numbered cards are very plain. However the card backs are awesome, I want some sleeves of this evil moth. The game comes in a very small box, is a cheap price and although it can be played with 2 decks of playing cards, its much more fun this way and I would recommend cheating moth to everyone, you're bound to need a filler game at some point, why not make it cheating moth? Moggle Motte uses cheating as an awesome game mechanic to make a very fun, fast, light card game.
